re: Last Update

So, the Save Steve Holt project went away.

But I'm still writing, me, my wife, son, and dog moved to an awesome Townhouse last week, and I, of course, have some stuff on the horizon.

Save Steve Holt!

Hey!

I feel like R. Kelly saying that "normally I don't do this but uh..." I'm going to talk about a project before it's officially shot but the ball seems to be rolling on it and I'm excited, so...

A few months ago I started seeing buzz about the Save Steve Holt! campaign, this is their mission statement:

In 2011 it was announced that Arrested Development would return for a 4th season scheduled to air in early 2013. To our knowledge, Justin Grant Wade, who played the beloved character Steve Holt, has not yet been asked to return to the show to reprise the role. Please help us bring back STEVE HOLT!

I was intrigued not only because I'm an "Arrested Development" superfan, but because I directed a short film in 2008 called Jasper that co-starred Justin.  In fact, you can still watch Jasper here.

I emailed the team behind Save Steve Holt! suggesting that we shoot a video, maybe get Funny Or Die to produce it or feature it.  I said I have some contacts at FoD and I've worked with Justin before (and included this picture of Justin making fun of my storyboards).

https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=0aea0b77b0&view=att&th=135d5be5bf640242&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=f_gzbuovpb0&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P9Ak37HzNzrIEz2ISv2kio5&sadet=1338664730891&sads=Yw3u4IN6ztYv8JbNov4OdINhRII&sadssc=1

They responded and were very excited about the prospect.  I pitched them some premises, we decided on one, and I wrote a couple drafts of the sketch.

Then we waited to see if Funny Or Die would be involved.  I got notes from FoD, wrote a new script for them, and then we waited some more.

In the mean time, on their end, the SSH crew has been getting the word out and the story has been picked up like crazy.  The AV Club, Perez Hilton, The Huffington Post to name a few.  Justin has been doing radio interviews, he did an AMA on Reddit.  For more in depth about their journey go to their blog http://savesteveholt.blogspot.com/

At this point we haven't officially been turned down by FoD but we're going to go ahead forward with the original sketch I wrote (and probably shoot the script I wrote for FoD as well while we're at it).  Today the SSH team released this video:

So, if all goes as planned, I will be directing those videos in July!

You can stay up to date on all this by following me on Twitter, and definitely follow Save Steve Holt on Twitter, check out the blog, 'Like' them on Facebook, and sign this petition.

May.

I'm going to try to focus on the positive for the most part but first let me talk about some disappointments.  Still no word from Funny Or Die as to when they're going to produce the sketch I wrote for them, I got invited to participate in a 48 hour film festival that I had to turn down, and I was going to direct the top secret project I keep alluding to but now it looks like I won't be able to do that either.  I already wrote the script for it though so hopefully it still gets produced without me.

OK, whine, whine, whine, that's over (well it isn't really, I'm bummed, but this isn't for that).

My sketch class at UCB is/was awesome!  There are two weeks left and I've written some great sketches for it.  I've gone to some shows at the UCB and they were great.  I'm going to continue taking classes there when they fit in with my schedule.  And hopefully I'll be able to put my sketches up on their stage at some point which would be a dream come true.

On a similar note, my blog The Best Sketch Comedy On The 'Net has been a fun venture.  I've gotten in touch with a bunch of sketch groups, comedians, filmmakers, etc.  One sketch group got me tickets to their show for free and I went.  While I was there I ran into a guy who used to live in my apartment complex and he had been following my stuff on Funny Or Die and now we're talking about doing some sketches together.  I met up with another sketch group and they bought me some beer!  So even in just the two months I've been doing that blog it has already reaped benefits.  So go to that blog, follow it if you have a Tumblr., 'Like' it on Facebook, and follow @TheBestSketch on twitter for updates.

It has been made increasingly apparent that I need to have a spec TV episode in my writing repertoire.  For the uninitiated, a spec (short for speculative) is an episode of an existing, current television show that you write to show you can write for already established characters, know the TV structure, and um, that you're a good writer.  So I recently started watching "Up All Night" and it's great so I'm going to watch every episode and then write my own.

So, in conclusion, bummer city and I'm the mayor's assistant, UCB sketch is where it's at, Best Sketch for lolz, and staying "Up All Night" to write!

...what?

Nevermind.

Saturday the 14th!

Yeah so, I didn't get that job I interviewed for, it was for a Creative position at Break Media aka Break.com.  It would have been writing original, branded, and other web content for their several websites and it would have been awesome.  I was really bummed that I didn't get the job and I was disappointed in how they broke the news to me.  Also, I received the news at like 7am after Christian inexplicably woke up at around 5am, so I wasn't in a very good head-space at the time.

And I like that the position was just called 'Creative,' I want a job where the title is just one of my characteristics, I guess I'll keep waiting to hear about that 'Handsome' position I applied for.

Also, that Break.com shirt I said I won in my last post arrived, it's t-shirt shaped salt for my job-not-getting wound.

But, as to not wallow in not getting that job I signed up for a sketch writing class at the UCB.  I had my first class on Tuesday and it seems like it's going to be cool.

My contact at Funny Or Die has been busy and the sketch of mine that she is supposed to produce is apparently not very high on her totem pole.  But my top secret project is coming along nicely and there is enthusiasm for it and really that's all I ask.
